Karl is currently the Programme and Education Co-ordinator at the Whakatane Museum and Gallery. He was formerly at Objectspace as the Exhibition Co-ordinator, a founding member of Lightbox artist run initiative and is an active independent curator. Karl has researched and written for a number of projects including the original ‘Initiate - A Resource of Artist-Run Projects in Auckland’, the ‘Code of Practice’ and ‘Appliance’.

I'm originally from Germany and have done a lot of things in my life. I came to NZ in 1995 and didnt have much to do with art then. Worked and lived for 4 years in Otahuhu and spend most of my day spannering professionally Harley-Davidson's for the gangs and race bikes for crazy kiwis. All very interesting and in hindsight inspiring. Went to East Germany in 2000 and studied art and design at a university in Halle/ Saale, closely connected to the Bauhaus philosophy. Did a conceptual Masterpiece about "the activity of human beings as an energy resource". Further down the line I worked and lived in Tokyo and Berlin. I came across Pecha Kucha Nights 2004 in Tokyo and started this in Berlin as the first German city. I decided to come back to NZ in 2007 with my partner, after the birth of our son. In 2007 nobody had setup a Pecha Kucha Night in New Zealand so I thought it's time to start this here, too. Now Auckland and Wellington are well set up, Christchurch is just starting and Hamilton will come. I like Pecha Kucha because I don't have to comment on things. Pecha Kucha just brings up the potential that’s already there and lets things speak for themselves. Pecha Kucha is about content and reflects quite well what's happening in those cities.

Matt Blomeley

Graduating with a Bachelor of Design (Hons) from Unitec in 2005, Matt has been involved in a number of art projects in Auckland and has a specialist knowledge of artist run spaces. Currently the Programme Coordinator at Objectspace, Matt has recently curated his first show here - "Redefining Agility: craft/science/sport".
